Bonsai
The Japanese and Chinese languages are something of an unfathomable mystery to many of us in the North West corner of Europe. All those strange symbols are not our cup of tea when it comes to making sense of the written word. In fact, our experience of South East Asian culture in general is pretty much restricted to affairs oof the stomach. That is unless, of course, you are familiar with the ancient art of Bonsai. Any initiate of the art of Bonsai will be able to add to your vocabulary of `yes`, `no`, `goodbye`, `thank you` and `don`t touch my moustache` two more words of Japanese to increase your fluency. These make up the two halves of the word Bonsai and are `bon` which I am reliably informed is the word in Japanese for basin or bowl) and, (you guessed it) `sai` which apparently means `to plant`. There you are, your first lesson in Bonsai (pronounced bon-sigh) is over. Bet you still can`t write it in Japanese, though.
